Elementary school shooting in Oregon, USA: Police: Multiple victims, gunman dead

US police said today that a shooting occurred at an elementary school in northwest Oregon, causing "multiple victims" and that the gunman was dead.

Agence France-Presse reported that Bend Police Department spokesperson Sheila Miller said at a press conference: "We have not confirmed who shot the suspect. It may have been a member of the public. At this time, we know that there are multiple victims."

The Bend-La Pine School District issued a statement on social media stating that Silver Rail Elementary School, where the incident occurred, has been placed on lockdown.

The school district later posted that law enforcement officers escorted students on buses to another location to reunite families with their children.

Miller said that the police received an emergency report at 1 p.m. local time, and officers arrived at the scene about two minutes later.

"A few seconds later, we heard over the radio that the suspect in this case had fallen to the ground," she said.

Miller also pointed out that ambulance crews have sent at least two people to local hospitals. "We do not know their conditions."

The school is located more than 160 kilometers southeast of Portland and enrolls children from kindergarten to fifth grade.
