[Reporter Hou Jiayu/Taipei Report] As the population ages and health awareness increases, prostate cancer has become an important health threat to men in Taiwan. According to the cancer registration data of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the incidence rate of prostate cancer is increasing year by year, and it has become one of the most common cancers in men in the country. In order to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment and integrate care, Taipei Veterans General Hospital has officially established the "Prostate Cancer Treatment and Research Center" to integrate multi-disciplinary medical teams and advanced technologies to create a full-course care platform covering early detection, accurate diagnosis, personalized treatment and long-term tracking.
Chen Weiming, President of Taipei Veterans General Hospital, said that prostate cancer is currently the third most common cancer among men in Taiwan and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in men. There are approximately 10,000 new patients every year, of which about 30% are in the fourth stage when diagnosed. About 2,000 people die from prostate cancer every year. Therefore, it is urgent to improve the quality of diagnosis and treatment and establish a complete integrated care model.
Chen Weiming pointed out that Taipei Wing General Hospital has completed nearly 8,000 da Vinci surgeries, including nearly 3,000 prostate cancer surgeries; it has accumulated more than 200 cases of heavy particle therapy, and combined with precision medical technologies such as nanoknife and lithium-177 radioligand therapy, a complete prostate cancer treatment model has been established. In the future, we will continue to integrate medical resources and build a representative prostate cancer integrated care center in China.
Huang Yixiu, director of the Department of Urology, said that the newly established center integrates the Department of Urology, the Department of Oncology, the Department of Radiation Oncology, the Department of Pathology, the Department of Imaging Diagnosis and Treatment, the Department of Nuclear Medicine, as well as inter-professional teams such as nutrition, pharmacy, nursing and case management to provide one-stop medical services from diagnosis, treatment to follow-up.
In terms of diagnosis, the center has introduced technologies such as multi-parameter magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI), precise slicing and PSMA positron photography to improve disease detection rate and staging accuracy. For treatment, it provides multiple personalized solutions such as da Vinci robotic arm surgery, radiation therapy, heavy particle therapy, hormonal therapy, new drugs and PSMA nuclear seed therapy according to the patient's condition. While improving the treatment effect, it also takes into account the patient's quality of life.
Zhong Xiaoren, the first director of the center, said that the 5-year survival rate of patients with stage 1 to 3 prostate cancer in Beirong currently exceeds 90%, with stage 2 as high as 98.66%, and even the 5-year survival rate of patients with stage 4 prostate cancer exceeds 60%. In the future, in addition to continuing to improve clinical care, the center will also promote precision medicine, genomic medicine, artificial intelligence and clinical research, deepen international cooperation, and further improve the quality of prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment in Taiwan.
Beirong said that the establishment of the prostate cancer treatment and research center symbolizes an important milestone in the integration, precision and personalization of domestic prostate cancer care.
