FC Bayern Munich reached the DFB Cup round of 16 after a shock victory

The footballers from double winners FC Bayern Munich only cleared the cup hurdle at Borussia Mönchengladbach after a long period of trepidation. Coach José Barcala's team made it into the round of 16 with a difficult 2-1 (0-1) win against the second division team.

In front of 6,608 spectators at Borussia Park, Norwegian Vanessa Gilles turned things around with her goals in the 74th and 80th minutes - both after a corner from Klara Bühl. Luca Graf had previously rewarded the cheeky outsider with the opening goal in stoppage time in the first half (45th + 2).

Stars on the bench for now

Before the next Champions League challenge on Wednesday at Benfica Lisbon, Barcala had rotated diligently. Bühl, Giulia Gwinn and Pernille Harder, among others, were missing from the starting line-up, but the trio came after the break. The Gladbach women took advantage of the Bayern women's initial difficulties, including a header from the crossbar from Mia Giesen (15th).

This year's cup finalist VfL Wolfsburg confidently won 6-0 (3-0) against Baden-based SC Sand, who play a league lower. Svenja Huth and Ella Peddemors each scored two goals. Eintracht Frankfurt also left no stone unturned against the regional league team Karlsruher SC and won 6-1.

Bundesliga newcomer VfB Stuttgart has to worry

Some other Bundesliga teams had to tremble: VfB Stuttgart was only able to win the game at Turbine Potsdam 3-2 after extra time, after the promoted team was 2-0 behind. But after Thalia Dias de Souza was sent off after an assault in the 81st minute, the guests saved themselves into extra time thanks to Verena Wieder (86th) and Mira Arouna (90th + 4). VfB captain Chantal Hagel scored the winning goal there.

1. FC Köln (2:1 at Hertha BSC), Hamburger SV (2:1 at SV Meppen) and Werder Bremen (1:0 at VfL Bochum) also had difficulties at times. The round of 16 will take place from October 31st to November 2nd.
