وقال الزيدي، في حفل رسمي في العاصمة بغداد: "نعلن انتهاء مهمة التحالف الدولي لمحاربة داعش لنثبت أن التعاون بين القوات الصديقة والشعوب الصديقة أثمر انتصارًا على واحدة من أحلك صفحات التطرّف والوحشية في التاريخ".
وأضاف: "العراق يجني اليوم ثمار تضحياتٍ جسيمة، وجهود بطولية امتدت لسنوات، حتى بسطت أجهزتنا الأمنية بمختلف صنوفها سيطرتها على المشهد الأمني والميداني في أنحاء العراق كافة".
وتابع: "نتوجه بالشكر والتقدير إلى جميع الدول الصديقة التي شاركت في التحالف الدولي، وإلى قادته وضبّاطه ومدربيه ومستشاريه الذين عملوا إلى جانب قواتنا الأمنية".
وقال الزيدي إن "انتهاء مهمة التحالف الدولي لا يعني انتهاء معركتنا مع الإرهاب، بل هو انتقال العراق إلى مرحلة يتولى فيها المسؤولية الكاملة عن أمنه واستقراره".
وشدد رئيس الوزراء العراقي على أنه "لا سلاح خارج مظلة القانون، ولا قوة خارج مؤسسات الدولة، وفق ما يقضي الدستور ووفق ما دعت اليه مرجعيتنا الرشيدة وما يريده شعبنا".
وجرى تشكيل التحالف الدولي ضد داعش في سبتمبر/أيلول 2014، بعد أن اجتاح التنظيم مساحات شاسعة من العراق، وامتدت الحرب حتى حتى ديسمبر/كانون الأول 2017.
