Currently, the global population is aging, common challenges such as the high incidence of chronic diseases and rising medical costs continue to be highlighted. The modernization of traditional medicine has become an important issue of common concern to all APEC economies. How to transform local traditional medicine resources into health dividends and industrial momentum is a practical issue that many Asia-Pacific economies urgently need to solve.
According to Chen Wenfeng, the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine has evolved over more than a hundred years and has gone through three stages: preserving traditional Chinese medicine, developing traditional Chinese medicine, and industrializing traditional Chinese medicine. At present, in terms of inheritance, innovation and industrial integration of traditional Chinese medicine, the school is focusing on promoting the standardization and confirmation of clinical experience; inheriting the teacher-to-teacher model, promoting the digital collection and annotation of medical records and diagnosis and treatment ideas of famous old traditional Chinese medicine; building a Guangdong Southern Medicine Seed Industry Innovation Park, collecting more than a thousand Lingnan medicinal germplasm resources, and breeding excellent new varieties; linking pharmaceutical companies to build a flexible customized production base. Transform hospital syndrome differentiation experience into preparation products for the public; create a "general large model of traditional Chinese medicine + model matrix of famous specialist doctors + full-process intelligent equipment" system, positioning digital tools as an extension of the knowledge, knowledge and inquiry; open up four transformation tracks of innovative traditional Chinese medicine, hospital special preparations, intelligent medical equipment of traditional Chinese medicine, and consumer products with the same source of medicine and food, and open up the closed loop of the industry.
Chen Wenfeng said that many APEC economies have rich local herbal medicine and folk healing resources, but they generally fall into the dilemma of "rich resources and fragmented industries". The school’s modern path to develop and industrialize traditional Chinese medicine can provide the underlying logic for various Asia-Pacific economies and adapt to their own resource endowments.
He suggested that in terms of resource development, a census of native medicinal plants should be carried out and the breeding of improved varieties should be promoted. At the level of industrial collaboration, priority should be given to the development of flexible, asset-light processing models, and there is no need to blindly build asset-heavy pharmaceutical factories. In terms of technological innovation, we build a local traditional medicine clinical database, promote lightweight AI syndrome differentiation tools, and rely on local people to accumulate evidence-based evidence chains. At the talent and governance level, build a government-industry-academic-scientific research-application-finance multi-party collaborative platform, reform the teaching system, and cultivate compound talents who take into account traditional skills and modern industrial capabilities.
