Firefighter injured in forest fire in Darmstadt-Eberstadt

A firefighter was injured in a forest fire in the Eberstadt district of Darmstadt. According to the fire department, a ground fire is burning north of the Eberstadt correctional facility. Because of the smoke, the city notified affected areas via the Modular Warning System (Mowas).

According to the statement, the forest fire was reported in the morning. The fire brigade had been on duty with a large contingent since midday. There are currently around 90 members of the professional fire brigade and several volunteer fire brigades as well as other aid organizations and supporters on site, it was said in the late afternoon.

Soil is considered contaminated with ammunition

According to the fire department, the affected area is around 12,000 square meters. The risk of spreading to neighboring forest sections is assessed as low, it said.

According to the fire department, extinguishing work is made more difficult by the fact that the affected forest area is considered to be contaminated with ammunition. Therefore, special caution must be exercised. The operation was expected to last until the evening hours.
