Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Launches Defense Startup Backed by Palantir CEO Alex Karp

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is launching a defense technology venture backed by Palantir CEO Alex Karp. For those unaware, Palantir is America's biggest defence technology company. Palantir has several multi-million deals with American government agencies including the Pentagon. Ukrainian defence startup reportedly aims to transform Ukraine’s frontline battlefield innovations into commercial security products for Kyiv and Western allies. Since leaving public office, Fedorov has actively courted Silicon Valley to scale Ukraine’s defense manufacturing footprint. Alongside the new company, he is also reportedly seeking US capital for a defense technology fund targeting autonomous robotics, drone interceptors, and AI-guided missiles. While the financial terms of the investment have not been disclosed, Fedorov’s office said in the statement that Karp will serve as the startup’s first lead investor of the defence startup. In a video shared on X, by Fedorov, Karp is seen praising the initiative, framing it as a way to export Ukraine’s wartime expertise to partner nations. “You and your colleagues are launching a company that I think will be defining for the world,” Karp said, noting that the enterprise could bring Ukraine’s direct combat experience “as a product to allied countries. ” Key details remain under wraps, but what makes it important All the key operational details about the company remain under wraps. The move comes as Ukraine’s war against Russia fuels rapid iteration in uncrewed systems, battlefield management software, and artificial intelligence. 35-year-old Fedorov spearheaded many of these initiatives during his tenure in government before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replaced him in July during a broad cabinet reshuffle. “During the full-scale war, our team gained unique experience working with defense technologies in Ukraine and seeing firsthand how technology is transforming modern warfare,” Fedorov said in a statement. The venture also further deepens Fedorov's longstanding ties to US tech leaders. During his government tenure, he frequently interfaced with major American tech executives, recently commending Elon Musk as “the most important tech person and entrepreneur in the world for our country”.

Palantir CEO Karp is not the only Silicon Valley exec with strong relations with Ukraine. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt too has quietly become an important link between Silicon Valley and Ukraine’s most lethal unmanned strike asset. Schmidt launched Project Eagle, which later became Perennial, with the explicit goal of building a drone that costs less than a used car. Called Hornet, the $5000 unmanned aircraft can carry 5kg of explosives across 200 km in a one-way configuration designed for maximum range rather than recovery. Schmidt did not merely fund this project from a distant office. He actively shaped Perennial as Project Eagle before it evolved into a manufacturing operation capable of producing Hornets at wide scale.
