Formula 1 Announces New Madrid Circuit 'Madring' to Host Spanish Grand Prix Until 2035

Formula 1 debuts a new circuit to its calendar, and despite no grand prix raced yet, the Madring already boasts a corner that is poised to become an iconic scene in motorsport.

The Spanish Grand Prix has moved from Barcelona to the nation's capital, Madrid, with the brand-new Madring contracted to host the event until 2035.

The track uses a combination of public roads and private land and will at times reflect a street circuit, and other times a permanent race track.

But the defining feature of this 22-corner circuit is turn 12: La Monumental.

Turn 12 is a long, banked hairpin that promises to be unlike anything in F1 currently.

The 270-degree curve will have banking up to 13.5 degrees, not as dramatic as the 18-degrees of banking at Zandvoort, but this corner will be taken at much higher speed.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz drove around the circuit earlier this year in a Ford Mustang GT, and said he expects F1 cars to be flying around La Monumental.

"My feeling is the corner is going to be flat out the whole way, and it's going to create an overtaking opportunity into the next tight left," he said.

"The banking will allow you to maybe position the car higher up or lower down if you want to get clean air to follow.

"But if it's easy flat, then it will also be a corner where if you stay tight, you will produce quite a bit of slipstream, like you see in Zandvoort."

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli enters this weekend with a 66-point lead in the drivers' championship over teammate George Russell, after a stunning win in Italy last Sunday despite starting 19th on the grid.

Australian Oscar Piastri is seventh in the drivers' championship, 151 points behind Antonelli, and placed fifth last Sunday at the Italian Grand Prix.
