Formula 1: shorter Grands Prix and new technical rules from 2027

News coming regarding the Formula 1 regulations, starting from 2027. The scheduled Grands Prix, in fact, will be shorter with the start of next season.

In line with the power unit regulation changes that will be introduced next year regarding fuel flow, a reduction in the total race distance from 305 to 290 km has been officially approved, corresponding to a reduction of two or three laps. This is what emerged in a note from F1 at the same time as the third meeting of the Commission of 2026, which took place in London in these hours.

Other changes to the regulation

In addition to the 15 km cut per Grand Prix, the F1 management has decided to apply other small changes to the regulations. With regards to races interrupted by rain or other reasons, it has been decided to introduce a time limit for the conclusion of any race activity, but to eliminate the current limit of three hours for the duration of the race, from start to finish, including interruptions. In fact, the two-hour limit of actual competition will remain in force.

That's not all, because it was also decided to guarantee greater flexibility to extend the free practice sessions precisely in which they need to be interrupted. Finally, the indication arrived to eliminate the approval of the gearbox for 2027, thus preserving the freedom of development of suppliers. “All regulatory changes are subject to approval by the FIA ​​World Motorsport Council (WMSC),” the statement concludes.
