Ski clubs are asking the FISI for concrete action on safety after the accidents of recent years

With the new ski season upon us, the issue of safety on the slopes is back in the news among technicians and athletes in the sector, after the serious accidents that have occurred in recent years.

"The new ski season is imminent, but from the point of view of safety for the athletes practically nothing is changing", says Alessandro Garrone, president of the Sestriere Ski Club:

"Several times the Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi has spoken out encouraging the Federation to adopt far-reaching initiatives on safety and even the FISI President Flavio Roda, after the serious accidents, had announced a concrete intervention plan on the issue, but the response to the Minister's requests never arrived. On the contrary, the latest federal resolutions continue to shift the blame, which is left heavily on the athletes and coaches. All this cannot be accepted, especially after the accidents of recent years, some unfortunately fatal. grieving families, athletes who are no longer with us and those who continue to practice this beautiful sport have the right to have concrete answers."

The request of ski clubs

"The Federation, in this sense, should evolve - continues Garrone -. It has had many months ahead of it to involve the entire movement on this topic and, therefore, to conceive the concept of safety on the slopes for athletes as a fundamental and essential requirement for the activity. The Federation, however, taking up and reinterpreting the indications of the International Federation, has given birth to a regulation which certainly does not prove to be close to the athletes, entrenching itself in a crystal tower. A federation proves itself capable when it opens up its operational horizons. The ski clubs are calling for an immediate review of the responsibility system and concrete actions to improve safety in training and racing. The ski season is upon us."
