Why It Matters

France: The protests are now to be followed by strikes

The major French unions have called for nationwide strikes and demonstrations. The focus is on salaries, public services, employment and tax fairness. The CGT is calling for a ten percent increase in the minimum wage to over 2,000 euros gross. In Paris, a march was planned from the Place de la Bastille to the Place de la Concorde, but was banned by the police prefecture and rerouted to an alternative route. A Paris administrative court rejected the unions' complaint against the changed route. 70,000 police and gendarmes are on duty.
