For the upcoming international matches – national coach Klopp makes Füllkrug decision

Now the striker question has been clarified: Jürgen Klopp is relying on Niclas Füllkrug for the upcoming international matches. According to WELT information, the national coach has nominated the Werder striker for the Nations League duels against Serbia (November 13th) and the Netherlands (November 16th). The squad will be officially announced on Thursday.

After his strong form in the Werder jersey, Füllkrug has the chance to make a comeback in the selection of the German Football Association (DFB). The 33-year-old attacker last played for Germany in the Nations League game for third place against France (0-2) on June 8, 2025.

A lot has happened since then. At Werder, Füllkrug has found his way back to his old strength, scores regularly and brings a lot of self-confidence. The striker has already scored twelve competitive goals. There is currently hardly any German center forward who can boast a comparable goal rate.

Klopp had recently cast doubts about the veteran's return. Ultimately, it's also about building a team for the future with a view to the 2028 European Championship. Klopp recently said: “Niclas Füllkrug scores one goal after another in the Bundesliga, but is 33. That’s not my fault.” But Füllkrug's performances apparently convinced the national coach.

The Werder Bremen striker himself remained calm. In the ZDF “Sportstudio” he said about Klopp’s statement: “He listed facts, nothing more.” And about a possible return: "But if my country needs me, I'm there. Even at 40 or older, I would still be ready." His international record is impressive: 14 goals in 24 appearances.

For Klopp, it is the second squad nomination since he took office. Unlike the first time, when he called up 44 players for two squads and four international matches, this time the squad is significantly smaller. Now only 23 players should be nominated. Füllkrug, who wasn't there in September, is one of them.

Important points are at stake for Germany in the last two group games. The DFB team is currently only in third place. In order to reach the quarter-finals of the Nations League in March 2027, at least second place is required. With Füllkrug the necessary goal threat should now return.
