Press Statement from the Families in the Ship Disaster Case in Kyrenia

In the 25th day of the ship disaster in Kyrenia, families who lost their relatives attended the 5th hearing.

Families waiting for their missing relatives made a press statement to speed up the search efforts and provide them with regular, official information.

"THE NEGLIGENCES SHOULD BE FULLY INVESTIGATED"

He requested the court to fully investigate the condition of the life jackets on the ship, whether the evacuation was done on time, the technical inspections of the ship, the voyage permit and the responsibilities of the public officials related to the company.

"YOU HAVE TO REACH ALL THOSE PEOPLE"

Emphasizing that they want the process to proceed in a transparent manner, the families noted the following:

"Days pass, we wait. We definitely cannot get enough information. Every news we cannot reach, every question that is not answered, every uncertainty that is not resolved increases our doubts. We are now saying clearly: You have to reach all the people left on that ship. You owe it to us."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The high-speed passenger ship named "Fleet Jet", which was operating between Kyrenia Port in TRNC and Taşucu Port in Mersin, started to take in water from its front part shortly after departing from Kyrenia at noon on August 30, and sank while trying to return to Kyrenia Port.

After the ship with a total of 267 passengers and crew sank, 239 people were rescued.

In his statement on September 19, TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that the body of another person sought as missing had been found, and as a result of the investigations, it was confirmed that the person who lost his life was Mehmet Bayhan.

Thus, the number of passengers who lost their lives on the ship, whose wreckage was found at a depth of 554 meters off the coast of Kyrenia, increased to 15.

Efforts continue to find the 13 missing people.
