Global Education Summit kicks off in Hong Kong with focus on AI and talent development

More than 2,000 policymakers, educators and parents from around the world gathered in Hong Kong on Saturday for the inaugural Global Education Summit, which focused on regional talent development, artificial intelligence integration and changing academic pathways.

The two-day event, held at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in Wan Chai and co-organised by the South China Morning Post and HSBC Premier, aims to help parents and students navigate an increasingly complex range of academic options. It caters to families in Hong Kong, mainland China and Southeast Asia with children in secondary school or pre-university education.

Attendees include principals and admissions officers from more than 40 leading secondary schools and universities, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

Opening the morning session, Secretary for Education Christine Choi Yuk-lin said Hong Kong was transforming the traditional study-abroad trend from a “one-way street into a two-way global highway”.

Choi highlighted the government’s push to expand science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, as well as its plans to allocate more land for higher education.

“We have set a clear goal. By the 2026-27 academic year, 35 per cent of all undergraduate students at our government-funded universities will be enrolled in STEAM disciplines,” she said.
