Gose wins fifth medal at the European Swimming Championships in Paris

Isabel Gose has once again expanded her collection of medals at the European Swimming Championships in Paris. After double gold in the open water and silver in the 800 and 1500 meters, the 24-year-old also took second place in the final of the 400 meter freestyle. In 4:02.41 minutes, Gose secured silver behind her Italian opponent Simona Quadarella (4:01.34). After taking bronze on the two long distances, her training partner Maya Werner also reached the podium again in third place in a personal best time of 4:03.73 minutes.

"Five courses, five medals, I really can't complain," said Gose on ARD, but added with regard to the third race, in which she had to admit defeat in the fight for gold, "It's quite a scratch on the ego, I have to say."

Märtens takes bronze

Olympic champion Lukas Märtens swam to bronze over the same distance in 3:44.57 minutes behind French swimming star Leon Marchand (3:43.14) and Hungarian Oliver Papai (3:44.46). Oliver Klemet, who entered the final as the fastest in the lead, came home empty-handed in fifth place (3:45.16).

Gose, who triumphed in the knockout sprint and relay in the first week of the European Championships in the Seine, is now the first German swimmer in 20 years to be on the podium five times at a European Championships. Double Olympic champion and double world champion Britta Steffen also won five medals in Budapest in 2006.

Gose was crowned European champion in the 400 meters in Rome in 2022 and won her first international title. This time it wasn't enough for victory, but Gose was only just above her German record time of 4:02.14 minutes from 2024.

Märtens also grabbed gold in Rome four years ago. However, in Paris on Sunday morning, the world champion and world record holder only made it to the final in eighth place in 3:46.33 minutes. However, after silver and bronze in the relay, he won his first individual medal in the title fights at the Center Aquatique Olympique.

Previously, 100 meter world champion Anna Elendt missed the podium in the 50 meter breaststroke in fifth place in 30.35 seconds.
