The Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia unanimously nominate Mona Neubaur as the top candidate

The Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia want to go into the state election campaign with Deputy Prime Minister Mona Neubaur at the helm.

Almost seven months before the NRW election, the state executive board unanimously nominated the 49-year-old Minister for Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy as the top candidate. As early as 2022, Neubaur had successfully led the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia into the state elections as state party leader at the time.

A state delegate conference in Essen in November will make a final decision on the list for the state election on April 25, 2027 and decide on the election program.

The first black-green alliance in North Rhine-Westphalia since 2022

In 2022, North Rhine-Westphalia Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst and Neubaur forged the first black-green government alliance in the most populous federal state. The governing style of the NRW coalition of the CDU and the Greens is generally described as quiet. Possible conflicts between the coalition partners are not discussed publicly.

According to current surveys, the Greens could get 15 to 18 percent in the election, the CDU is between 29 and 34 percent. The black-green state government could expect a narrow majority of seats in the state parliament. In the 2022 state election, the Greens received 18.2 percent of the votes and the CDU 35.7 percent.
