War in the Middle East: Israeli raids in Lebanon and Gaza, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

The IDF struck Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip during the night in response to the explosion of a bomb that hit a military vehicle yesterday. According to the armed forces, the bomb planted by Hamas - which hit a military engineering vehicle operating on the Israeli side of the so-called "Yellow Line", in the north of the Strip - caused no injuries.

Eleven people died in Israeli raids launched overnight on a village in southern Lebanon, including two newborns. This was reported by the Lebanese national agency Nna, after the attacks had already caused seven deaths yesterday despite the ongoing ceasefire.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly ordered the dismantling of illegal settler settlements in the West Bank, following strong pressure from the United States. The change was announced by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich during a conference in Jerusalem, who added that he "did not like this provision". It is not yet clear when the eviction should begin, which should concern around a hundred outposts, made up of caravans and pre-fabricated buildings, built in areas A and B, i.e. those areas of the West Bank destined to be under the total or partial control of the Palestinian National Authority.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army ordered new evacuations in southern Lebanon, adding that it had already hit Hezbollah facilities. At least 7 people were killed in yesterday's IDF raids.

On the economic front, the war in the Middle East presents an energy bill for Italy of almost 12 billion euros in six months, according to Cna estimates. Between 1 March and 31 August, the increased outlay for fuel, electricity and gas stood at around 11.6 billion euros compared to the levels before the explosion of the crisis.

The United States chose to rely on economic pressure to end the war against Iran. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have apparently decided to resort to a new strategy, moving from bombings to sanctions, to try to achieve their objectives.

The spokesperson of the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Majed Al-Ansari, raised an alarm on CNN: "The world is heading for an industrial catastrophe if this situation continues" in the Strait of Hormuz. Doha, engaged in mediation, has indicated as a priority to ensure that the Strait is open and that there are no military escalations.

Meanwhile, an investigation by the Financial Times reveals that Russia is secretly helping Iran develop supersonic missiles through a top-secret program called C430L.
