Guterres defends the importance of the UN in his farewell speech and receives a standing ovation

António Guterres spoke for more than 30 minutes in his farewell speech at the UN Assembly and received a standing ovation.

At the end of his speech, the Secretary-General of the United Nations defended the importance of the body:

"The world does not need a weaker United Nations. It needs a UN strong enough to face the world as it is and determined enough to build the world as it should be. Excellencies, after ten years, there is a conviction that I hold even more strongly than when I arrived: the greatest power is not the power to dominate. It is the power to build a future that works for everyone."

Guterres was applauded when he defended the two-state solution on the Israel-Palestine issue.

The US delegation did not follow the demonstration of support.

In a farewell tone, Guterres, who leaves command of the UN at the end of this year - he has been in the position since 2017 -, admitted that the organization is in crisis and needs to reform itself to reflect current times.

Each country's delegation has six seats in the General Assembly plenary. In Brazil, the first lady, Janja, and Chancellor Mauro Vieira already take their places.

In addition to them, there are also Celso Amorim, special advisor to the Presidency for International Affairs; the Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, Wellington Dias; Audo Faleiro, deputy chief advisor of the Special Advisor to the President of the Republic; and ambassador Sérgio Danese.

Teleprompter changes

The teleprompter operating room, a system used by authorities to read their speeches, moved this year and is in a room that can be seen by the General Assembly.

The change came after US President Donald Trump complained about the device's operation last year. He criticized the UN at the beginning of the speech, saying it had stopped working. However, according to the United Nations, it was the White House that did not know how to operate it.

According to TV Globo reporter Felipe Coaglio, the UN wanted to make the operation more transparent.

President Lula's team was seen by TV Globo staff loading the Brazilian leader's bags into a truck this Tuesday morning (22).

The preparation took place even before Lula's speech at the UN General Assembly because he will embark back to Brazil this Tuesday, in the evening.

Brazilian authorities have breakfast with Lula

Brazilian government authorities arrived in the last few minutes at the residence of the Brazilian ambassador to the UN, Sérgio Danese, to have breakfast with the Brazilian president, according to the TV Globo team present at the scene.

Lula's special advisor, Celso Amorim, and Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, were seen entering the residence.

The Brazilian delegation will be positioned in the 10th row of the UN Auditorium during the General Assembly this week, according to a map obtained by a g1 reporter on site.

The Brazilian diplomats will be in the leftmost column of the auditorium (in relation to the stage) and right in front of the Chinese delegation.

Brazil will be a few rows away from the United States delegation, which will be in the 7th row and in a more centralized position in the auditorium.

The 81st UN General Assembly begins this Tuesday (22) in New York, United States.
