The jeweler Mario Roggero in prison: "Path of critical review of my conduct"

"In these two months of detention I have had time to think and I have started a process of critical review of my conduct." To tell the judges of the

Milan Surveillance Court, is the jeweler Mario Roggero, according to what was reported at the end of the hearing to discuss the request for deferral of sentence by the lawyer Stefano Marcolini.

"The Court reserved the right to decide on the request - explained the lawyer -. In the spontaneous declaration, Mario referred to the fact that every life deserves respect and that therefore, probably, on that fateful day he could have adopted a different, different and milder conduct". The 72-year-old jeweler from Grinzane Cavour (Cuneo) has been detained in Bollate since July, after being definitively sentenced to 14 years and nine months for killing two robbers and injuring a third who attacked his jewelery shop in April 2021.

When asked if we could speak of a sort of repentance on Roggero's part, his lawyer clarified: "The noun 'repentance' was not used in the hearing. I would speak more precisely of this path of critical review of one's conduct which in any case leads there. Talking about repentance seems to me to be inappropriate at this moment".

Another request for the deferral of the sentence was presented in Turin and rejected two days ago, again put forward by Roggero's defense while awaiting the decision of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella regarding the request for mercy in the case. In any case, it is already known that Roggero, through his lawyer, will challenge the provision of the Surveillance Court of Turin and the defender has explained that he will appeal to the Supreme Court.

Today, however, during the discussion the parties focused on the technical problems linked precisely to the request for deferment of the sentence. The board "was well aware of everything that happened before the Turin Surveillance and also of the recent Turin decision. We asked ourselves the question of whether Milan could therefore enter into the merits or not", said Roggero's lawyer.

The deputy general prosecutor, Emma Gambardella, since there is already a ruling, asked that the request be declared inadmissible. The lawyer Marcolini, however, insisted on a decision on the merits. The Court has reserved the right to file the decision in the next few days.

The defender then added that he found the jeweler "lost weight" but still "combative". "The soul is still that of a person who believes that justice can give him something - he continued - This something, in this case, is the object of the request we addressed to the Supervisory Court".
