Ilhan Omar: US investigators search house of Donald Trump critic

In the USA, investigators searched the house of Democratic MP Ilhan Omar in the capital Washington. As Fox News reported, the raid on President Donald Trump's outspoken critic was based on allegations that Omar's now-deceased father had provided false information in his daughter's naturalization documents when she was still a child. Other US media such as the New York Times and NBC also reported on the search at Omar's home.

The US Department of Justice confirmed a search but did not name any names. A search warrant obtained by the Justice Department was executed in the “Washington area,” the ministry said. The measure is “part of an ongoing investigation at the federal level.”

According to Fox News, the search was carried out early in the morning by investigators from the HSI investigation department of the controversial US immigration agency ICE. Trump's border protection representative Tom Homan had already said in September that Omar was the subject of investigations. He did not give any details at the time.

Omar said at the time that she had not been contacted by authorities. The allegations are a political campaign. She has not yet commented on the raid.

Omar, 44, is of Somali origin and belongs to a group of left-wing members of the House of Representatives, known as The Squad, who are particularly critical of Trump. It is repeatedly used by Trump and other Republicans as a target for racist hostility. Trump called Omar “trash” at the end of 2025 and suggested that she “go back” to Somalia. A few weeks later, Omar was sprayed with fluid at a town hall meeting in Minneapolis.

The raid took place a good three weeks before the US midterm elections on November 3rd, in which the Republicans would have to fear for their slim majority in Congress. Omar is running for re-election in Minnesota.

Justice Department guidelines actually prohibit federal prosecutors and investigators from planning actions that could influence the outcome of an election or benefit a candidate or political party. In the past, the ministry had refrained from investigating political candidates about 60 days before an election.

On November 3rd, the Republican majority in the Senate and House of Representatives will be at stake.
