'WE SIGNED A CONTRACT IN EXCHANGE FOR LAND'

In his defense, the detained defendant businessman Halil İbrahim Babacan said, "In 2017, we signed a contract with the land owners for revenue sharing and flat payment for a land in Beylikdüzü. We had done different work in Beylikdüzü 10 years ago, but we had not been doing business in that district for a long time. Following this, we applied to the municipality and I went to meet Mr. Mehmet Murat Çalık as the advisor to the mayor in the municipality. I was told the following by Çalık: He said that it would be ideal to build a sports facility and that there was a need to build a sports facility that would contribute to education and social facilities. I told him that we were a construction company and that our company had made the aid or donations we had made before and then accounted for it and documented it within the scope of the donation and then donated it to the relevant institution. He told me that it would not be appropriate for us to do it in this sense, that there was a company that they had an agreement with and that it would be appropriate for that company to do this for us when necessary. "He said that he could issue invoices against our payments. Then I wanted to know who this company was. He said that it was Asoy İnşaat, Adem Soytekin. I also stated in my statement that these checks were later collected by Asoy İnşaat and that I did not know in what works, where and in what way he used them." he said.

'THERE IS NO ISSUE ABOUT BRIBERY'

Taking the floor to ask questions, Mehmet Murat Çalık said, "Did I make any coercive requests from you at any stage of your construction?" he said. Babacan said, "You did not make such a request."

Babacan said, "There is no issue regarding bribery. We are aware of the magnitude of the work we do. 'I HAVE NOT FACED SUCH TREATMENT'

Cemal Ufuk Karakaya, the unarrested defendant, said, "I am not a member of the council and I have never been a member of the council during my service. I attended the council meetings as the deputy general secretary. When the general secretary was on leave or on duty, one of his assistants would be given power of attorney, so I attended this council meeting. This type of proxy duty was usually notified to us the day before or on the same day."

Taking the floor to ask questions, İmamoğlu said, "Mr. Ufuk, have you ever witnessed us speaking in an imperative mood, such as 'do this and that, immediately take or put this down, lift it up, pay' in our work with you?" he asked. Karakaya said, "No, it has not happened, President. I have never faced such treatment." İmamoğlu said, "Therefore, is it possible for me to tie you to someone else outside the hierarchical order and make you experience something like 'you will take orders from him' in a place where I do not even give orders?" Karakaya said "No" to the question.
