Meeting between Araghchi and Lavrov at the UN: focus on Western Asia and the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with his Russian counterpart Serghei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN Assembly. During the meeting, the Iranian minister praised Russia's responsible position in opposing aggressive US unilateralism and the exploitation of international organizations to put pressure on independent nations," Araghchi himself reported in a note on Telegram.

The ministers "discussed developments in West Asia, following the United States' repeated violations of its commitments and its failure to comply with the terms of the Islamabad agreement. The Iranian Foreign Minister updated his Russian counterpart on the current status of the negotiations and the agreement reached between Iran and Oman for the establishment of a safe shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as on the ongoing mediation efforts to communicate the conditions and elements necessary for a return to the diplomatic process."

“Attributing the current insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz directly to the violation of commitments and hostile actions of the United States against Iran,” Araghchi stressed that “just as the Islamic Republic of Iran has shown seriousness in the diplomatic sphere, it remains determined to defend its national interests and security by preventing the United States from exploiting the Strait of Hormuz to threaten Iranian national security.” According to Araghchi, Lavrov reiterated "Russia's principled position of condemning military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran."
