IOC announces 7 countries interested in 2036 Olympics... Sports Council “actively supports attraction”

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Dae-ho Lee = While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has begun the process of selecting the host site for the 2036 Summer Olympics, the Korea Sports Council has reaffirmed its commitment to quickly implement the domestic hosting process.

The Korea Sports Council announced on the 3rd that it will provide support for the hosting of the 2036 Summer Olympics without a hitch as the National Olympic Committee (NOC) announced that seven countries, including Korea, Germany, Hungary, India, Qatar, South Africa, and Turkye, were confirmed as interested countries for the 2036 Summer Olympics announced by the IOC.

As soon as the joint hosting agreement between Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province, which hopes to host the Olympics, and Seoul Metropolitan City is concluded, the Sports Council plans to proceed without delay in the selection process for a domestic city in accordance with relevant regulations.

Sports Chairman Yoo Seung-min met with Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Governor Lee Won-taek on the 27th of last month to share the status of the joint hosting agreement and discuss future cooperation plans. On the 30th, he conveyed his position to the two local governments that he would quickly support related procedures in case of agreement.

The Sports Council said, “Based on the legacy of the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, we will work closely with the government and related organizations to successfully host the Olympics.”
