Avalanches and flash floods cause widespread devastation in Nepal

A collapsing glacier contributed to a so-called ice avalanche, which dragged large amounts of rock and soil with it. When the ice melted, a torrent of water, soil and rock arose. The devastation in the area is great. Buildings, bridges and roads have collapsed. According to information, around 1,100 people are confirmed dead and several thousand people are still missing.

Nepal's Association of the Deaf: "The rescue work is still ongoing"

Nepal's Association of the Deaf, NDFN, has been on site in the affected area and met deaf people.

- We still have no information that any deaf person has died. The rescue work is still going on, says Sitaram Ohja, general secretary of the NDFN.

Deaf's home has been destroyed

Between five and seven deaf people's homes are said to have been destroyed in the disaster. It is difficult to get an overview of whether a deaf person is missing as communication in the area does not work.

- We try to communicate as best we can. NDFN has been there, seen the situation and met the deaf. Going forward, we are trying to arrange food, clothes and somewhere to live for the deaf people who have been affected, says Sitaram Ohja.

The NDFN is now collecting money and holding a dialogue with the government about support for those affected.
