Population of People Over 100 in Japan Exceeded 100 Thousand for the First Time

The Japanese government announced statistics regarding the increasing elderly population on the occasion of "Respect for the Elderly Day", which is celebrated every year on September 15 in the country.

According to the data of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, it has been noted that the population over the age of 100 has been increasing for 56 years.

'THOSE WHO TROPPED A CENTURY'

As of September, the population over the age of 100 in the country was recorded as 107 thousand 677. Thus, the population of those who have "turned a century old" in the country exceeded 100 thousand for the first time in the country's history.

Compared to last year's data, the number increased by 7 thousand 914. It was recorded that 94 thousand 298 of those over the age of 100 were women and 13 thousand 379 were men.

'AT 114 AND 112 YEARS OLD'

The oldest woman was recorded as 114-year-old Kishimoto Fuyo and the oldest man was 112-year-old Kato Hikaru.

In Japan, population data for "those who have passed a century" were first recorded in 1963. The number of people over the age of one hundred first exceeded 1000 in 1981, 10 thousand in 1998 and 50 thousand in 2012.

According to the data, the average life expectancy in Japan was 87.3 for women and 81.3 for men.
