Jharkhand Health Department on High Alert for Potential H1N1 Cases

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Health Department has been placed on high alert in view of potential H1N1 (Swine Flu) cases across the state, with Health Minister Irfan Ansari issuing comprehensive directives to step up surveillance, testing, and hospital preparedness.

Urging citizens not to panic, Ansari emphasised that "H1N1 is a respiratory viral infection, and with timely detection and proper medical treatment, most patients recover. Therefore, people do not need to panic; rather, they should remain alert and seek medical advice in a timely manner upon developing symptoms."

Chairing a high-level review meeting on Saturday with senior department officials, including Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar, medical college heads, and Civil Surgeons from all districts, the Health Minister directed district surveillance officers to maintain strict vigil and ensure prompt reporting.

"The Health Department is fully alert regarding swine flu. All necessary preparations are being ensured to tackle any potential situation in the state. Systems have been strengthened at every level, from timely identification of suspected patients to testing, treatment, and referral when needed. It is our resolve that no person will be allowed to lose their life to swine flu," Ansari said.

As part of the preventive measures, the Minister has directed authorities to reserve 10 additional beds in all medical college hospitals, including the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi, as well as in all Sadar Hospitals across districts.

Hospital administrations have been instructed to ensure adequate availability of medical oxygen, essential medicines, diagnostic facilities, and ICU/HDU preparedness, along with trained medical and paramedical personnel.

The minister also called for intensified monitoring and reporting of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) cases to facilitate early identification and prompt medical intervention.

Additionally, instructions have been issued to maintain heightened surveillance at major transit points, including airports, railway stations, and bus stands. Health teams will conduct clinical evaluations for individuals displaying symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or respiratory distress, and facilitate testing and immediate care where required.

"The Government of Jharkhand is fully committed to protecting the health and lives of its citizens. All units of the Health Department are in alert mode, and the situation is being continuously monitored. People are appealed to remain alert, take precautions, and seek timely medical consultation if symptoms appear," the Health Minister added.
