Statement on West Nile Virus from the TRNC Ministry of Health

In the statement made by the Ministry of Health of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), it was stated that 2 patients who applied to health institutions with complaints of upper respiratory tract infection, sore throat, fever and weakness were hospitalized. In the examinations, it was determined that both patients had West Nile virus. It was reported that the general condition of the patients is better than yesterday, their life-threatening condition is not in danger and their health conditions are being closely monitored. The Ministry also stated that one person, who had no complaints, tested positive for West Nile virus during routine blood tests, and that there was no negative effect on the health of this person.

In the statement of the Ministry of Health, it was stated that West Nile Fever is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of Culex type mosquitoes. While most people infected with the virus do not have any symptoms; It has been noted that some people may experience symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, weakness, muscle and joint pain, vomiting, rash and swelling in the lymph nodes. It was emphasized that in rare cases, the disease can affect the central nervous system and cause serious health problems such as encephalitis or meningitis, and that this risk is especially higher in the elderly and people with weak immune systems.

It has been reported that there is no West Nile Fever vaccine developed for humans or a special drug that directly affects the virus, and supportive methods are used in the treatment. While it is emphasized that the most effective method of protection against the disease is to avoid mosquito bites; Citizens were called upon to use mosquito nets, drain accumulated water regularly, choose long-sleeved and light-colored clothes during peak mosquito hours, and use mosquito repellent products.
