Secondhand Smoking Causes the Death of 1.7 Million People Every Year

The research published in the journal "The Lancet" examined the prevalence of secondhand smoke and the associated disease burden in 204 countries and regions.

The study stated that in 2023, more than 2.7 billion people worldwide, including approximately 767 million children, were exposed to secondhand smoke, and this caused the death of approximately 1.7 million people.

It was stated that adult deaths were primarily caused by "ischemic heart disease" and child deaths were caused by "lower respiratory tract infection".

The study stated that second-hand smoke continues to be a significant health risk on a global scale and called for stronger tobacco control measures, especially to protect women and children.
