Local elections in Lower Saxony: Slightly higher voter turnout in the morning

Two hours after the polling stations opened, 7.60 percent of those eligible to vote have taken part in the local elections in Lower Saxony. The state election authority announced this when asked. Postal votes are not yet included in the value.

This means voter turnout of 0.97 percentage points is slightly higher than in the local elections five years ago. According to the state election authority, voter turnout at that time was 6.63 percent. In 2021, the proportion of postal voters was above average due to the corona pandemic.

A total of around 6.3 million people in Lower Saxony are eligible to vote this time. In many municipalities, decisions are made about the composition of the city and local councils as well as the district councils, as well as about new mayors and district administrators.

The polling stations are open until 6 p.m. The state election management expects that the first results of the direct elections for mayors etc. will not arrive until 7 p.m. at the earliest. The first results from the districts are expected from around 10.30 p.m. According to the state election management, the provisional nationwide district results will probably not be available until Monday morning - this was also the case in the 2021 elections.

Possible runoff elections will take place on September 27th this year.
