War in Ukraine: Front lines and situation maps

The information provided by both parties from the war zone regarding deaths or military successes can rarely be independently verified. The source for the front lines shown here is data from the US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The sources the ISW uses and how the institute arrives at its assessments are summarized on this methodology page.

Our map, with its red coloring, shows which areas, according to the ISW's assessment, are controlled by Russia or which Russian troop operations are being carried out there. Blue colors show where the Ukrainian military has been able to recapture such areas from Russian troops since the counteroffensive began. The changes from the previous day are highlighted in a darker color.

In addition, we mark zones in which, according to the ISW, particularly heavy fighting has taken place in the last 24 hours. The maps also show where the Russian occupying forces have built defenses. The Cyrillic spellings of the Ukrainian community names are automatically translated and displayed on the map.
