Lavrov claims that threats to Russian security must be eliminated and that Europe is blocking peace negotiations

Speaking on Saturday at the UN General Assembly, Lavrov also said that "the threat to Russian security will be eliminated and that peaceful life will return". The foreign minister repeated Moscow's official stance that the war efforts and the invasion are a "military special operation".

Lavrov also claimed that European countries are preventing attempts to conduct peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv.

- Europe is doing everything it can to prevent negotiations that (President Donald) Trump's government is interested in, Lavrov claimed without supporting his argument.

Sergey Lavrov also met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in a meeting on the sidelines of the General Assembly's official program. Wadephul had then presented the Berlin government's sharp appeal to Moscow to "leave the dangerous path towards escalation". Germany accuses Russia of being behind, among other things, recent attempts to attack the airport in the German city of Leipzig.

It was the first time the foreign ministers of the two countries met since Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
