The Iranduba landfill, in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus, has a history of environmental irregularities and has already been the target of millionaire fines even before the fire that has hit the area since Thursday (13). On Friday (14), the Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) imposed a new fine of R$2.505 million on the City of Iranduba for atmospheric pollution caused by the burning of solid waste in the open air.
The fire started on Thursday afternoon (13) and, on Friday night (14), it continued to be fought by 15 firefighters and ten vehicles, with the flames confined to the landfill area, according to the Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM). This Saturday morning (15), g1 contacted the corporation to update the situation, but until the last update of this report, it had not received a response.
The dump has been monitored by Ipaam for at least three years due to problems in waste disposal. In 2023, City Hall was notified to adopt measures to adapt and recover the area. As the determinations were not fully complied with, the municipality received, in 2024, a fine of R$500,000.
In 2026, a new inspection identified other irregularities. Ipaam ordered the presentation of a recovery plan for the area and imposed another fine, of R$1.5 million, for repeat offenses.
During an inspection in March this year, technicians found that the site continued to function as an open-air spillway. According to the report, waste was dumped directly on the ground, without adequate coverage and without environmental control structures.
The inspection also recorded the accumulation and flow of leachate, the absence of drainage and gas collection systems and piles of waste over four meters high.

New fine
The new notice was applied by Ipaam on Friday (14), after inspection at the site during the fire. According to the agency, technicians discovered the burning of waste in the open, a practice prohibited by environmental legislation.
"During the inspection, the team found the burning of waste in the open, a practice prohibited by environmental legislation. Based on this finding, the Institute adopted the planned administrative measures and will continue to monitor compliance with environmental obligations related to the area", stated the director-president of Ipaam, Gustavo Picanço.
The fine is based on Federal Law No. 12,305/2010, which establishes the National Solid Waste Policy, and Federal Law No. 9,605/1998, known as the Environmental Crimes Law.
Iranduba City Hall has 20 days to pay the fine, present an administrative defense or request a conciliation with the environmental agency.
Area is monitored by the Federal Court
In addition to environmental fines, the dump is also monitored by the Federal Court. In July this year, a court decision determined that the Municipality of Iranduba must prove compliance with obligations related to the recovery of the area.
The process also foresees a new technical inspection by Ipaam to update information on the environmental recovery of the site and the licensing status.
