Garcihernández's 'squatters' leave the house amid boos from the neighbors

The two adults and four children who had occupied an empty house in the Salamanca town of Garcihernández have left this address, after 3:00 p.m. this Thursday, to leave the town on Civil Guard patrols amid boos and insults from the neighbors.

The pressure from the neighbors, who have gathered since the occupation around the house became known, has gotten the 'squatter' family to agree to talk with the Civil Guard agents and, finally, to leave the single-family home to which they had entered by forcing one of its doors with a radio on Wednesday afternoon.

This house, the result of a family inheritance, had just been put up for sale, so it was currently uninhabited. "We have seen that putting the 'For Sale' sign on a house is very dangerous," the mayor of Garcihernández, Manuel Jesús Sánchez, acknowledged to Europa Press. In fact, after this first occupation, in the early hours of this Wednesday, another family, also unknown in the town, tried to access another empty house, whose tenant was on vacation, but the noises alerted a neighbor, who quickly notified the Civil Guard and they managed to arrest them.

"No one was going to sell them even a loaf of bread"

The 'squatter' family that left the town this Thursday was not known in Garcihernández, but some children from the Salamanca town were the ones who raised the alarm when they saw them loitering around the house and forcing the door to enter. "I don't know what kind of life they would want to lead in the town, if no one was going to sell them even a loaf of bread as soon as they saw them," Sánchez wonders. "It's not the same as in a city where they can go unnoticed. Here they were going to have a lot of problems," he adds.

In this context, the first mayor of Salamanca has thanked the Civil Guard for mediation in the conflict, since several neighbors even wanted to enter the house to forcibly evict the squatter family. "I already warned them and tried to reassure them because we didn't want any more problems," Sánchez added.
