Man sentenced to 20 years in Texas Killing Fields case

A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison in a rare trial connected to the decades-long "Texas Killing Fields" investigation.

James Dolphs Elmore Jr., 61, was handed the maximum sentence by a Galveston County jury Thursday, a day after being convicted of manslaughter in the death of 16-year-old Laura Miller, whose body was found in 1986.

Elmore was arrested earlier this year after investigators determined he had prepared the fatal dose of cocaine that killed the teenager.

Law enforcement agencies believe multiple perpetrators were involved in the deaths of more than 30 girls and young women whose remains were discovered along a section of Interstate 45 southeast of Houston starting in the 1970s. The cases have gained widespread public attention, inspiring books, films, and a Netflix documentary.

Miller was among four victims discovered between 1984 and 1991 in an isolated League City field, located approximately 28 miles southeast of Houston.

An indictment stated that Elmore prepared a vial of cocaine administered to Miller by his longtime friend, Clyde Hedrick, whom authorities believed was responsible for killing all four women found in the field.

Although the district attorney’s office announced in March that it intended to seek grand jury indictments against Hedrick, the 72-year-old died by suicide before the case could be presented.

Hedrick had previously been convicted of manslaughter in 2014 over the death of Ellen Beason, whose body was recovered in 1985 after she went missing the prior year. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice noted he was released in 2022 and remained on parole at the time of his death.

Following the loss of his daughter, Laura Miller's father, Tim Miller, created Texas EquuSearch, a non-profit group that helps search for missing persons.

Most of the homicides tied to the "Texas Killing Fields" remain unsolved.

In a separate resolution in 2022, Oklahoma death row prisoner William Reece pleaded guilty to three Texas murders, including those of 12-year-old Laura Smither and 17-year-old Jessica Cain in Galveston County, along with 20-year-old Kelli Cox of Denton, whose body was recovered in adjacent Brazoria County. Reece was handed life sentences for all three murders.
