Matthias Sammer has high hopes for the future sports director of the German Football Association (DFB), Per Mertesacker, when it comes to renewing German football. “I’m eagerly waiting for Per Mertesacker,” said the former national player at the “Sky Sport Impuls” panel discussion in Munich. "He has to complete it. He's tall, he has broad shoulders, he's a world champion. And now he has to have the courage to describe it in a conceptually understandable way and then he has to defend his content."

Sammer himself was sports director at the German Football Association from 2006 to 2012 and knows how difficult it is to assert yourself in the association. “The desperation is part of the payment,” said the 1996 European champion. Mertesacker, the 2014 world champion, “has to assert himself mercilessly, and if he falls by the wayside, then he was the wrong person.”
