Cela a ainsi profité à Lewis Hamilton, auteur d'une remontée incroyable à deux tours de la fin alors que le GP semblait lui échapper. Avec plus d'une minute de retard sur la tête de course, le pilote de Ferrari a accroché une troisième place inespérée. "Quelle course difficile. Au début, nous n'avons pas fait les bons choix. C'était très difficile, et j'étais à plus d'une minute. Je me suis dit que c'était fini pour moi, mais on a inversé la tendance, et on a chassé les autres pilotes. C'est la plus belle course qu'on ait jamais eue ici", s'est réjoui le Britannique. Son coéquipier monégasque Charles Leclerc a lui terminé quatrième.

Le départ du Grand Prix de Formule 1 de Bahreïn a été retardé d'une heure et demie en raison de très fortes pluies qui se sont abattues sur le circuit de Sepang. Un premier départ a ensuite été avorté après que plusieurs voitures ont eu des problèmes électroniques et informatiques pendant les tours de formation sur la piste détrempée.
