MediaTek announced the new Helio G99+ chipset. The processor, which comes with LPDDR5X support, offers a significant performance improvement for budget-friendly 4G smartphones.

MediaTek officially announced the Helio G99+ model, updating its popular 4G chipset series for the budget-friendly smartphone market. Based on TSMC's 6nm production process, this new processor focuses on a strategic improvement, especially in memory technology, rather than making radical changes in its technical architecture.

The most notable innovation was LPDDR5X support, which replaced the old LPDDR4X standard and increased data transfer speeds to 5500 Mbps. This move allows smartphone manufacturers to use modern memory components more efficiently, providing a sustainable efficiency increase in the overall performance of the devices.

Processor Architecture Continues to Remain the Same

Technical reviews on Helio G99+ show that MediaTek has not made any changes to the performance cores. The processor maintains its hybrid structure consisting of two Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 2.0 GHz. On the graphics side, the Mali-G57 MC2 unit continues to work.

This proves that the new chipset is a version of the existing platform adapted to current market conditions, rather than a generation jump.

Changes in the Memory Market Shape Production

The main motivation for the development of the new model is directly related to the supply and demand balances in the global DRAM market. As memory manufacturers shifted their production lines to higher profit margin products such as HBM and DDR5, older generation LPDDR4X memory began to become difficult to supply and their costs began to increase.

With G99+, MediaTek aims to keep the price tags of entry-level phones constant by offering manufacturers an infrastructure that is more easily available and supports current standards.

Retaining key features such as UFS 2.2 storage support and 108 MP camera capabilities allows manufacturers to switch to the new processor without changing their existing designs.

4G Technology Meets Current Needs

Despite the proliferation of 5G networks, 4G technology still has a big place in emerging markets. MediaTek's Cat-13 level Dual VoLTE supported modem integration continues to offer an uninterrupted connection experience on budget-friendly smartphones.
