The second hearing was held in the case of the accident that killed 4 children in Mersin

The second hearing of the case filed against driver M.K, who hit 6 people waiting at the pedestrian crossing in Çay Mahallesi Bekirde location in Mersin's Akdeniz district on February 2, 2026 and caused the death of siblings Kübra Güney (15) and Büşra (15) Güney and their aunt's children Zerdil Atak (18) and Necla Öztürk (16), was held at Mersin 7th High Criminal Court.

The court decided to continue the defendant's detention and to conduct a re-discovery at the accident scene and postponed the hearing to December.

Before the hearing, the families of Kübra Güney, Büşra Güney, Zerdil Atak and Necla Öztürk, as well as their neighbors, friends and representatives of non-governmental organizations, came together in the courthouse garden. Citizens carried photographs of the 4 children who died in the accident.

Mersin Bar Association Children's Rights Center Members Lawyers Ronya Mira, Şevval Özer, Burcu Doğru and Hacı Baskak watched the hearing at the Mersin 7th High Criminal Court as observers.

EXPERT REPORT WAS PRESENTED

At the hearing, the defendant's lawyers stated their claims that the defendant M.K. did not commit any speed or lane violations and presented an expert report to the court.

Lawyers of the victim families objected, stating that the report was biased. The court decided to conduct a re-discovery at the scene of the accident and to continue the detention of the defendant and postponed the hearing to December.

Making a statement in the garden of the courthouse at the end of the hearing, Zerdil Atak's father, Veysel Atak, said, "I hope the decision comes as we want. I hope there will be no result that will hurt the public. One of the most important factors for the case to be taken seriously will be public pressure. It is happy news for us that the prisoner is not released. Because, as the relatives of the disappeared, we think that the person can escape due to the severity of the crime he committed. He was born abroad anyway."

Noting that the trial will be held in December after the discovery, Atak asked the public to support the case process and said, "Don't wait for it to happen to you. We can all be victims of this accident. There is a perception in society. I will lie down for a few months. I hope this case will eliminate this opinion. Everyone will know that human life is not worthless. All lives are valuable. We cannot just dismiss it as an accident."

Lawyer Ronya Mira Dağ, who attended the hearings on behalf of Mersin Bar Association, also emphasized that they will follow the legal process to ensure full justice.
