Mass on the 7th day of a medical student killed in a traffic fight brings together students, friends and family in Taubaté

Students, friends and family of Bruno Hashimura San Juliano, aged 23, gathered at the mass on the 7th day of the student's death, held this Wednesday (7) in Taubaté.

Bruno was shot dead on Wednesday morning (30), after a traffic dispute on Avenida do Povo, in Taubaté. The suspect is military firefighter Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, aged 28, who is under arrest.

The group met at the Santa Terezinha Sanctuary, in the central region of Taubaté, for the 7pm mass. Dressed in white, family, students and friends walked approximately 800 meters on foot to the place where Bruno was murdered.

At the scene of the homicide, the group held a moment of prayer, tributes and an action with white balloons in memory of the student.

Prison

Military firefighter Marcos Paulo Fujarra de Oliveira, who shot dead medical student Bruno Hashimura San Juliano, aged 23, was arrested this Wednesday morning (7), in São Paulo.

Exclusive images taken by reporter Pedro Melo and cameraman William Almeida, from TV Vanguarda, show the moment in which Marcos arrives at the police station in a Fire Department car, gets out of the vehicle and walks to the police station, located in the Casa Verde region, next to the 13th Police District.

The presentation at the police station takes place to continue the process in the civil sphere. Afterwards, Marcos is expected to be sent to the Romão Gomes Military Prison, in the capital of São Paulo.

Marcos had been detained on Tuesday night (6) at a Fire Department headquarters in the capital of São Paulo. He is the target of a preventive arrest warrant issued by the São Paulo Court.

In a statement, Marcos' defense said that "it will adopt all appropriate measures, strictly observing the formalities, deadlines and guarantees ensured during the course of the process, an opportunity in which it will fully exercise the adversarial and broad defense."

"The Defense also clarifies that Marcos is at the disposal of the competent authorities, having appeared before the police authority in the Capital, from where he was sent to the competent military prison establishment, remaining at the disposal of the Justice. At this moment, the Defense will maintain an attitude of respect for the institutions and the regular procedural progress, reserving itself to present its manifestations and defensive theses in the records and at the appropriate procedural moments, based on the evidence that forms part of the procedure", says the note.

Finally, the office stated that "it will continue to fully monitor the case and provide public clarifications that prove relevant, without prejudice to the preservation of the defendant's defensive strategy and legal guarantees."

Remember the case

Bruno was a 4th semester Medicine student at the University of Taubaté (Unitau). He was driving when he got involved in a traffic dispute with the firefighter. A video shows Bruno running down the street shortly after being shot.

According to police, four to five shots were fired. Bruno was hit, ran for a few meters, but could not resist his injuries and died.

According to the statement, the firefighter got out of the car and started yelling at Bruno. Then, he allegedly elbowed the vehicle's window three times until it broke. He then fired the shots.

According to the witness, Bruno remained inside the car, with the windows closed, and did not argue or make any move to leave the vehicle. In Bruno's car, the police seized a pocket knife.

What the defense says

Lawyer Claudio Rodrigues, who defends the firefighter, presented another version of what happened.

According to the defense, the first contact between the two occurred in the Taubaté entrance tunnel. The student allegedly cursed and threatened Marcos' wife with an object that appeared to be a weapon.

The two would have met again shortly afterwards, in the Avenida do Povo region, when the cars stopped at a traffic light.

The defense claims that the firefighter, who is also a military police officer, got out of the armed vehicle and identified himself as a police officer to approach Bruno. According to the lawyer, the soldier would have done this because he feared a possible approach or assault.

Still according to the defense, when Marcos approached the car, the window broke and Bruno started making threats again. The lawyer claims that it was at this moment that the firefighter fired the shots.

The investigation is still seeking to clarify the dynamics of the discussion and what happened in the moments before the shooting. The Fire Department mourned Bruno's death. The corporation reported that the soldier is on unpaid leave and did not perform duties in the Vale do Paraíba region. The investigation continues.
