DF MP asks the governor for clarification on involuntary hospitalization of homeless people

The Public Ministry of the Federal District asked Governor Celina Leão (PP) for clarification on the current reception capacity and involuntary hospitalization of the homeless population.

🔎The law that regulates the measure was sanctioned by the GDF in July this year. The first involuntary hospitalization occurred in August, when a 31-year-old man was rescued walking on the subway tracks.

In the letter, sent to the GDF on September 2, the MP requests a diagnosis of the insufficiencies already existing in the current structure and an action plan to resolve them. The objective is to evaluate the capacity to implement the new public policy.

In the document, the Public Ministry reinforces that involuntary hospitalization must be an exceptional instrument and demonstrates concern about the use of the measure to compensate for the inefficiency of the health and reception system.

"The smaller and less accessible the out-of-hospital alternatives, the greater the risk that involuntary hospitalization will no longer operate as a last therapeutic resource and will begin to make up for structural deficiencies in public policy itself", says the MP.

The request was structured into seven axes that comprise specific actions for the homeless population — such as the Consultório da Rua — and the mental health care network in a broad sense. The DF government has 45 days to respond to the Public Ministry’s request.
