임 청장은 이날 국회 보건복지위원회의 질병청에 대한 국정감사 모두발언에서 이런 내용 등을 포함해 주요 업무 추진 현황을 보고했다.

임 청장은 "mRNA(메신저 리보핵산) 백신 개발의 임상 2상을 추진하고 필수 공공 백신의 국산화율을 높이겠다"며 "AI(인공지능) 기반 신기술을 활용해 차세대 치료제 신속 개발도 추진하겠다"고 말했다.

그는 또 "말라리아, 결핵, C형 간염 등 '퇴치 목표 감염병'을 집중적으로 관리하고, 카바페넴 내성균 등 의료 감염과 항생제 내성 관리를 강화해 안전한 의료 환경을 조성하겠다"고 강조했다.

그러면서 "예방접종 전 과정을 안정적·체계적으로 관리할 수 있도록 예방접종 관리법을 제정했다"며 "사람 유두종바이러스(HPV) 국가 백신 전환 등 효과성이 높은 신규 백신 도입과 접종 대상 확대를 통해 국가예방접종 사업을 질적으로 개선하겠다"고 덧붙였다.

이와 함께 임 청장은 "희귀 질환은 국가의 책임을 강화하고 고혈압, 당뇨병 등 만성질환 관리체계를 개편하는 한편 초고령사회에 대응해 근거 기반의 노쇠예방사업 추진 기반을 마련하겠다"며 "질병 관리 분야의 AI 대전환 전략을 수립하고, 활용 가치가 높은 데이터와 바이오 자원 인프라를 구축해 데이터 기반으로 미래 질병 관리 체계를 전환하겠다"고 했다.

질병청은 예년보다 일찍 유행이 시작된 인플루엔자(독감)가 내년 2월까지 유행이 이어질 가능성이 있다고 전망했다. 유행 규모는 작년과 비슷할 것이라는 게 질병청의 관측이다.

임 청장은 "시기를 조정해 인플루엔자, 코로나19 예방접종을 독려하고 있다"며 "특히 인플루엔자 백신은 조달 계약을 통해 전국 접종 기관에 순차적으로 공급하고 있고, 일부 물량을 확보하지 못한 의원급 소아청소년과에도 초도 접종 물량을 우선 공급하고 있다"고 설명했다.

코로나19 예방접종에 따른 피해 보상을 두고는 "피해 보상은 총 5천54건이 접수됐고, 심의위원회를 16회 열어 총 119건에 대한 심의를 완료했다"며 "안건당 논의 시간이 상당히 소요되고 있으나 합리적인 보상 기준을 마련하고, 심의 속도를 높여 나가도록 하겠다"고 말했다.
