A UME soldier dies and three are injured when a truck overturns in the Las Peñas de Riglos fire

A member of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) died this Sunday and three others were injured to varying degrees when a fire truck overturned while they were working to extinguish the fire in Las Peñas de Riglos (Huesca), sources from the Ministry of Defense inform EFE.

The department headed by Minister Margarita Robles has conveyed its "deepest condolences to the family and relatives" of the deceased soldier and has wished the speedy recovery of his three injured colleagues, according to a message published on social networks.

The four were part of the operation working to extinguish the Las Peñas de Riglos fire, which already affects an approximate area of ​​more than 16,000 hectares.

The president of the Government of Aragon, Jorge Azcón, has also conveyed his condolences to the lieutenant general of the UME, as reported by the regional Executive.

In statements to the media, Azcón specified that one of the injured is admitted to the Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza and has announced that in the coming days the Aragonese institutions will express their mourning for the death.

"All the members of the UME join in the pain of his family and colleagues and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," the unit added.

More than 570 UME soldiers and 170 media are carrying out missions to deal with the extinction of the Las Peñas de Riglos fire.

The Government delegate in Aragon has also conveyed his "love" to the family and the UME in a message on the social network X in light of the painful news.

"Once again, our recognition and gratitude to those who work to protect the lives of others," he concluded.
