Women can have IUDs inserted free of charge through the SUS in 23 units in Maceió

Women who wish to have an intrauterine device (IUD) inserted free of charge through the Unified Health System (SUS) can look for one of the 23 health units in Maceió qualified to carry out the procedure.

Service begins in Primary Care. The user undergoes an assessment and receives guidance on how the IUD works, indications, benefits and possible adverse effects.

Before insertion, the healthcare team checks the condition of the uterus, rules out a possible pregnancy and assesses the existence of infections. According to the coordinator of Women's Health in Maceió, Suzângela Mendonça, monitoring continues after placement.

“After the procedure, the patient continues to be monitored and, in approximately two weeks, undergoes an ultrasound to confirm the correct positioning of the device”, explained the coordinator.

The first step is to look for one of the units that offer the procedure. During the service, the team will assess whether the patient can use the method and request the necessary tests.

Among the tests that may be requested are:

Pelvic ultrasound;

Oncotic colpocytology;

Vaginal secretion culture;

Beta-HCG (to rule out pregnancy).

Before insertion, the user must also sign a consent form stating that they have received guidance and are aware of the benefits and possible adverse effects of the method.

To carry out the procedure, you must present:

Identification document;

CPF;

SUS card;

Proof of residence.
