Authorities in extraordinary meeting on investigation of electoral fraud

"Extra reconciliation due to the ongoing investigation into election fraud," it says in meeting notes that SVT has seen.

The meeting was held within the framework of the national election network, which coordinates the authorities' work to protect Swedish elections.

- There has been a lot of attention around the elections and the implementation of the elections, and because of that we called an extraordinary meeting on September 23, says Susanna Trehörning, operational manager at the Civil Defense Authority, MCF.

Seven authorities

In addition to the MCF, the Security Police, the Norwegian Police Agency, the Norwegian Electoral Authority, the Agency for Psychological Defense, the National Cyber Security Center and the Norwegian Post and Telecommunications Authority participated.

The police describe in meeting notes how the case was already investigated at the beginning of September, but was then closed due to "lack of concrete circumstances".

The investigation is now described as a high priority: "The investigation has a high priority with the Police, but it will take time," the notes say.

It appears that the Agency for Psychological Defense has received many questions, including from the Government Office, about how the case affects the information environment. The authority's assessment is that "there is currently not such a high level of intensity around the issue".

Discussed re-election

The issue of a possible re-election was also discussed. The electoral authority stressed that it was still too early to discuss the matter and pointed out that a re-election had never before been carried out at the Riksdag level.

In the notes, it appears that the Security Police is following the investigation, otherwise they had nothing to add.

- The security police work to prevent security-threatening activities from foreign powers and the Agency for Psychological Defense continuously follows the information activities of foreign threat actors that are directed at Sweden, says Susanna Trehörning at MCF.
