After train derailment in France: No suspected attack according to public prosecutor

After a train derailed in France, investigators do not believe there was an attack based on current information. There was “no evidence of a malicious act,” said Rouen prosecutor Sébastien Gallois. He also ruled out an attack.

The mayor of Nice, Eric Ciotti, had previously stated that the incident was "the result of an attack." The president of the Normandy region, Hervé Morin, also emphasized that it was a "criminal act" and also referred to a piece of rail that was found on the route. This didn't "just fall onto the tracks," says Morin.

Prosecutor Gallois now contradicted the representations. Further interviews should clarify how the section of rail that presumably caused the derailment got onto the route.

All clear after critical condition

The regional train with around 180 people on board collided with an object on Friday evening. Five wagons then jumped off the rails and one of them tipped over. The means of transport was on the route between Rouen and Caen.

Among the 44 injured was an 18-year-old whose condition the authorities initially described as “critical”. Prosecutor Gallois has now given the all-clear: the woman's life is no longer in danger.
