Sports Minister Li Yang decided to withdraw from the opening ceremony and other official activities because Japan, the organizer of the Asian Paralympic Games, downgraded his identity certificate from "Sports Minister" to "National Paralympic Guest". Cross-party legislators supported his decision, with the Democratic Progressive Party accusing China of political interference, while the Kuomintang believed the problem lay with the Japanese government and questioned its treatment of Taiwanese officials. The sports ministry said it had lodged a formal protest through diplomatic channels.
