Two rescued from tunnel after floods and landslides in Nepal and China

After the severe floods and landslides in Nepal, the teams struggled against time to reach the people trapped in the tunnel in the Trishuli 3A Hydroelectric Project. According to the BBC, rescue teams heard voices inside the tunnel on Friday morning and after efforts, they managed to get two people alive.

THE HOPE COMING AFTER DAYS

Nepal Ministry of Energy announced that teams were waiting for at least 42 people to be rescued after voices were heard from the tunnel.

The first person rescued was reportedly Sanjaya Shah. Shah was taken from the scene by helicopter and sent to the hospital in Battar, northwest of the capital Kathmandu.

It was stated that the second person rescued was Kabir Maharjan. It was reported that preparations were continuing for Maharjan to be taken to the military hospital Chhauni Hospital in Kathmandu.

While rescue teams continue to hope that there may be other people in the tunnel, it has been reported that the work continues.

FLOODS AND LANDSLIDES SWALLOWED THE REGION

The disaster caused great destruction in Nepal's regions bordering China. Flash floods and landslides that occurred after heavy rains hit Nepal's Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Kavre regions. The capital Kathmandu Valley was also heavily affected by the disaster.

Flood waters and mud masses caused great damage not only in Nepal but also on the Chinese side. Gyirong Port, located in the Xizang Autonomous Region in southwestern China, in the region also known as Tibet, was almost buried under mud due to floods and landslides.

LOSS OF LIVES REACHED 1,280

The toll of the disaster is getting worse. According to data from Nepal authorities, 1,259 people died and 5,083 people are missing in the flash floods that occurred last week.

Chinese authorities announced that 21 people died in the country and search efforts are continuing to find 541 people.

While the total toll of the two countries reaches at least 1,280 deaths, the fate of 5,624 people is not yet known. There are 844 foreign nationals among the missing.

While the search and rescue efforts of the teams continued in the region, the rescue of two people alive from the tunnel of the hydroelectric power plant days later increased hopes for the search efforts, despite the heavy toll.
