Nice-Le Mans: tribute to the victims of the attack of July 14, 2016 with a special jersey

The Nice-Le Mans match on Saturday evening which will take place at the Allianz Riviera will be an opportunity for the Riviera club to pay tribute to the victims of the attack of July 14, 2016, with a special jersey and numerous commemorations.

Before kick-off, a ceremony of contemplation will be organized on the pitch, in agreement with the victims' associations. All families and loved ones of the victims were invited to attend the meeting and this tribute, the club said in a press release.

A special warm-up t-shirt

The first responders mobilized on the night of July 14, 2016 were also invited, ten years after helping the victims of this truck attack perpetrated on the Promenade des Anglais in the name of the Islamic State (IS) group, which left 86 dead and 458 injured.

During the warm-up, the players of both teams will wear a t-shirt displaying the heart formed by the names of the 86 victims, highlighted in the 86th minute of each home match since August 16, 2016.

During the meeting, the Niçois will wear their third jersey, entirely dedicated to the memory of the victims. This golden tunic has 86 stars on its front, and the date July 14, 2016, on the back of the collar.

An auction planned

T-shirts worn during the warm-up and jerseys worn by OGC Nice for this meeting will then be put up for auction for the benefit of victims' associations. This season, before each home match of the season, a tribute will be paid and families of victims will be invited by the club.

Trained in Nice, Antoine Mendy, 22 years old but already at the club at the time, said at a press conference on Thursday: “We are going to make sure that this evening goes very well (...) and that we remember it as a symbol of the pride of representing Nice.”

“With the commemoration, this match will have even more importance in our eyes, in the eyes of the players, the staff, the club,” concluded coach Olivier Pantaloni. It must give us the strength to get our first victory and really launch our season.”

A minute of silence in memory of the victims of this attack was also observed on July 14 before the semi-final of the World Cup between France and Spain, in Dallas.
