The campaign event of presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo, this Sunday (18), one week before the second round of the presidential elections, brought together 71,900 people at its peak, according to the methodology of the USP/Cebrap and More in Common Political Debate Monitor.
With a margin of error of 12%, the estimate indicates that the public was between 63.3 thousand and 80.5 thousand people at 12:20 pm, peak time. The count is made from aerial photos, analyzed by artificial intelligence software.
Photos were taken at four times (11am, 11:30am, 12:20pm and 1:08pm). For the audience count, we selected 28 photos taken at 12:20 pm. The images covered the entire length of the act, without overlapping.
More in Common highlights that "the same methodology has been used since August 2022 to calculate the audience for various political events."

How is the calculation done?
"To count the audience, the Point to Point Network (P2PNet) method is used, developed by researchers from the University of Chequião, in China and the company Tencent. The software was trained with a set of crowd photos manually annotated by the University of Shanghai and another set of Brazilian photos annotated by the University of São Paulo.
In the method, a drone takes aerial photos of the crowd and software analyzes these images to automatically identify and tag people's heads. Using artificial intelligence, the system locates each individual and counts how many points appear in the image. This process ensures accurate counting, even in dense areas.”

Positioning on social networks
A survey by g1 showed that Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) adopted different strategies on Instagram throughout the electoral dispute. The analysis of 2,129 publications by the two candidates, between January 1st and October 14th, revealed that Flávio published more and had greater engagement in the pre-campaign, but Lula took the lead in the volume of posts during the campaign.
In the second round, Lula began to directly mention his opponent more frequently: the surname "Bolsonaro" appears in 26% of his publications, while "Flávio" is present in 20%. The PL candidate has reduced references to Lula, mentioned in 15% of his posts at this stage. Flávio's publications continue to focus on requests for votes and messages of victory: the words "vote" and "win" appear in 54% and 50% of the posts, respectively.
Despite publishing less, Flávio maintains significant engagement numbers. In the second round, the senator's typical publication registered 658 thousand likes and comments, compared to Lula's 680 thousand. The president, however, accumulates more interactions in total, driven by the greater volume of publications: 8.4 million per day, compared to 2 million for his opponent. See the complete survey.
