Norway gathers together to bid farewell to King Harald V, who died at the age of 89 on August 28, after 35 years of reign. The funeral began around 1 pm in Oslo Cathedral: the coffin, which was in the chapel of the Royal Palace, arrived there after a funeral procession.

King Harald V was the oldest ruler in all of Europe. Death came due to a blood disease which, due to an infection, rapidly worsened in recent weeks. Born on February 21, 1937, he was the first Norwegian-born monarch to inherit the throne in more than 600 years. He was also the first to marry (in 1968, to Sonja Haraldsen) a woman without royal titles.

Thousands of people followed the coffin's path to Oslo Cathedral. According to the NRK, 224 thousand citizens along the streets of central Oslo greeted "the grandfather of all Norway" one last time.

King Harald is succeeded by his son: King Haakon V, 53 years old, is now the youngest sovereign in Europe.

The funeral ceremony was attended by many royals. Among these, for the United Kingdom, Prince William and Princess Anne (godmother of Haakon VIII).

Also at the ceremony were Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene.

Also present in Oslo were King Philip VI and Queen Letizia of Spain.

There was no shortage of representatives from the world of international politics, including heads of state and government, including the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and the German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

The sovereign's body will rest in the royal mausoleum of the Akershus fortress, in the Norwegian capital.

After the funeral ceremony, F-35 fighters of the Norwegian Armed Forces flew over the center of Oslo in "missing man" formation.

The journey of King Harald's body from Oslo Cathedral to the Akershus fortress was accompanied by a second well-attended funeral procession through the streets of the city centre.

The ceremony represents the first state funeral for a sovereign in Norway since the death of Harald's father, King Olav V, in 1991: 35 years have passed.
